Samples of Informal Multiplication
Given below are some samples of informal methods of
multiplication carried out by children. Some of them are
done entirely mentally, others are partially or fully
written. However the steps have been written down for
clarity of the readers. Study the various methods used and
try to classify them among
Front end multiplication (left to right)
Multiplication in stages (using factors)
Multiplication by rounding (using distributive law)
Multiplication by halving and doubling (moving factors)
Miscellaneous methods
Keep in mind that often a method may have characteristics
of more than one category or children may use a combination
of more than one method to suit a specific question.
